Definition of acetylcholine

Acetylcholine is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the human body and plays a central role in signal transmission between nerve cells (neurons) and between nerve and muscle cells. It plays a key role in controlling muscle contractions, regulating heart function and the activity of the autonomic nervous system. Furthermore, acetylcholine influences cognitive processes such as learning, memory and attention.

Background

In the field of aesthetics, acetylcholine is particularly relevant in the context of the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). In this condition, sweat production is triggered by excessive activity of the acetylcholine system in the sweat glands. Botulinum toxin (Botox) is frequently used to block the release of acetylcholine at the nerve endings, thereby reducing sweat production.

Deficiency vs. hyperactivity

A deficiency or malfunction of acetylcholine can lead to neurological disorders such as myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness) or Alzheimer’s disease. Conversely, overactivity of the system can cause undesirable effects such as excessive sweating or muscle twitching (Spasticity). The targeted modulation of the acetylcholine system through medication or treatments such as Botox injections therefore offers a wide range of therapeutic options, both in medicine and in cosmetic surgery.
