What is a BBL operation?

The Brazilian Butt Lift, in short BBL, is a plastic surgery procedure to reshape and enlarge the buttocks using the body’s own adipose tissue. Unlike buttock implants, this method uses fat that has been harvested via liposuction from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips or thighs. The aim of the procedure is to achieve a fuller, rounder and more natural-looking buttocks, which complements the body’s natural contours. The BBL procedure is particularly popular amongst those who wish to avoid an unnatural-looking result and would instead prefer to have their figure sculpted using their own fat.

Aims and reasons for the BBL operation

BBL surgery is usually performed using for aesthetic reasons carried out, often in conjunction with the desire for a Body contouring. Patients benefit in two ways: on the one hand, excess fat is removed from problem areas; on the other, the buttocks are specifically contoured. Common reasons for having the procedure include:

  • Flat or disproportionate buttocks
  • Weight loss or age-related sagging
  • Desire for more feminine proportions
  • Avoiding implants and their risks

The procedure allows for individual adjustments to suit each person’s body shape and offers a natural-looking alternative to buttock augmentation using silicone implants.

Procedure for BBL surgery

The operation consists of two main steps and is available at General anaesthesia carried out:

  1. Liposuction: Suitable fat is harvested from areas of the body such as the abdomen, flanks, back or thighs. The donor sites are also contoured in the process, which further enhances the overall aesthetic result.
  2. Treatment and injection: The harvested fat is purified and filtered so that only healthy, living fat cells remain. These are injected into the buttocks in several thin layers, allowing the volume and shape to be built up with precision. The aim is to achieve a uniform, long-lasting result with a natural appearance.

The operation takes, depending on its extent, between two and four hours. This is followed by monitoring at the clinic, often involving an overnight stay.

Risks and complications

Although BBL surgery is generally considered safe, as with any operation, there are certain Risks. Possible complications include:

  • Infections at the puncture or injection sites
  • Loss of adipose tissue, when fat cells do not receive sufficient blood flow and die off
  • Thrombosis or embolism, particularly where the equipment is not used correctly
  • Seroma (fluid build-up) or haematomas
  • Asymmetrical results or uneven fat distribution
  • Scarring at the collection points

Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon, undergoing a thorough pre-operative examination and following all aftercare instructions are crucial for a good outcome and a recovery with as few complications as possible.

Aftercare and the healing process

The The aftercare phase is crucial for the long-term success of the BBL. In the first few weeks, it is essential that Compression clothing should be worn to stabilise the puncture sites and reduce swelling. It is particularly important to, to avoid sitting on one’s bottom, as this can interfere with the healing process of the transplanted fat cells. It is recommended that you lie on your stomach or use special seat cushions.

  • Gentle exercise is recommended at an early stage to promote circulation and lymphatic flow
  • Physical activity and sport should at least 4–6 weeks be avoided
  • Follow-up appointments with your doctor help to monitor your recovery

At this stage, it is possible to Swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness may occur – these are normal and will subside after a few weeks.

Results and shelf life

The final result is usually after 3 to 6 months visible once the tissue has settled and the transplanted fat has become firmly embedded. Since Not all fat cells survive, one expects a A loss of around 30–40 % of the injected volume. To achieve the best result, many doctors take care to „overcorrect“ slightly.

In the long term, the outcome depends heavily on the patient’s lifestyle:

  • Stable body weight maintains the volume
  • Healthy eating and exercise contribute to the long-term appearance
  • In some cases, a second treatment may be advisable in order to optimise the result

When performed correctly, the Brazilian Butt Lift offers a permanent, natural method of body contouring, whilst also providing the benefit of fat redistribution.
