Endermology: What massage really does for cellulite

LPG Systems’ Endermologie is a non-invasive, mechanical massage treatment that can help to smooth the skin and reduce dimples.

The battle against cellulite and the desire for a firmer body shape lead many people to seek out non-invasive treatment methods. One of the best-known and most established technologies in this field is Endermologie, developed by LPG Systems. It can help to visibly smooth the skin and reduce unsightly dimples through an intensive, mechanical massage.

But what is this method all about, how does a treatment session work and – the most important question – how long-lasting are the results? In our glossary entry, we provide you with a comprehensive and realistic assessment of Endermology.

Definition: What is Endermologie?

The Endermology is the patented brand name for a non-invasive, mechanical cell stimulation, which is carried out using a specialised device manufactured by LPG Systems. It involves a computer-controlled deep massage of the skin and connective tissue layers.

Using a treatment attachment that combines motorised rollers and gentle suction, a fold of skin is gripped, mobilised and massaged to stimulate metabolic processes in the skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue.

How does mechanical cell stimulation work?

Endermology is based on the principle of stimulating a reaction in the tissue through intense but controlled mechanical stimulation.

Activation of fibroblasts

The deep massage is designed to stimulate the fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) to produce more collagen and elastin. This leads to improved skin firmness and elasticity.

Stimulation of lipolysis

Mechanical stimulation can stimulate fat metabolism in fat cells (adipocytes) and thus help to mobilise stored fat.

Improved circulation

The treatment intensively stimulates local blood circulation and lymphatic flow. This helps to remove retained fluids and metabolic waste products more effectively, thereby reducing swelling and relieving congestion in the tissues.

The treatment process: What to expect

The treatment process: What to expect

  1. Consultation & Medical History: Before the first treatment, the problem areas are analysed and your individual goals are discussed.
  2. Putting on the treatment suit: To protect the skin and ensure that the treatment head glides smoothly, the patient wears a special, thin and highly elastic full-body suit.
  3. The treatment: The user guides the treatment head over the problem areas along precise, pre-determined paths. The device draws in a fold of skin and massages it using the motorised rollers. The intensity is adjusted to suit the individual.
  4. Duration: A session usually lasts around 35 to 45 minutes and is generally described as an intense but pleasant massage.

Main areas of application

  • Reducing the appearance of cellulite: This is the most common indication. The skin appears smoother and dimples are reduced.
  • Body contouring (Body Shaping): To tone problem areas such as the tummy, thighs, buttocks and upper arms.
  • Skin tightening: To improve skin elasticity following pregnancy or weight loss.
  • Supportive lymphatic drainage: For the temporary reduction of mild swelling and water retention in cosmetic treatments.

Realistic results: What you can really expect

This is the most important point to bear in mind if you want to avoid disappointment. Endermology is an effective method, but there are clear limits to the results it can achieve.

Not a miracle cure, but a temporary improvement

  • No weight loss: Endermology is not a method for losing weight. It does not reduce weight, but improves the appearance of the skin and the body’s contours.
  • Results are temporary: The improvements achieved through the treatment are not permanent. Without regular repetition, the improvements achieved will diminish over time and the tissue may return to its original state.
  • The need for a course of treatment: For visible results, an initial course of 10 to 15 sessions (usually twice a week) is required.
  • Preventative treatment is compulsory: To maintain the results achieved, follow-up maintenance treatments (e.g. 1–2 times a month) are essential.

Endermologie is most effective when viewed as part of a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Risks and side effects

Risks associated with Endermologie

Risks and side effects

When carried out correctly, Endermologie is considered a safe procedure with few side effects, as it does not involve any incisions or injections.

Common side effects:

Slight reddening of the skin immediately after treatment is normal. If the connective tissue is sensitive or the intensity is too high, small bruises may appear (Haematomas) arise.

Contraindications:

People with active cancer, skin infections or inflammatory skin conditions should not undergo this treatment. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, treatment should only be undertaken after consulting your doctor on an individual basis, as there may be an increased risk of haematomas. Caution should also be exercised in the affected area if you have varicose veins.

How much does an Endermologie treatment cost?

  • One-to-one session: approx. €60 – €120
  • Book of 10 (package): approx. €500 – €1,000
  • Cost of the treatment suit: One-off fee of approx. €20–€30 (for hygiene reasons, this is personalised).
